What is Granite?
Granite is an igneous rock. This means that at one time during its
development it was melted like volcanic lava. Unlike lava, however,
this molten (or molted) rock never reached the surface. It remained
trapped inside the earth where it slowly cooled and crystallized. This
crystallization resulted in a very uniform, speckled stone that ranges
in color from black and gray tones to pinks, browns, reds, greens and
whites.

Where Does Granite Come From?
Granite is quarried throughout the world in the form of huge blocks,
some weighing up to 20 tons. These blocks are cut into slabs that are
generally 3/4" or 1 1/4" thick, and the faces are polished
to the specified finish. The slabs are then carefully crated and shipped
to the fabricators who will process the slabs into the final product.

Where is Granite Used?
Granite is striking, functional and the most durable natural surface
available. These traits make granite ideal for kitchen countertops,
accent islands, bar tops, table tops and fireplace surrounds.

What About Cost?
Initially, granite costs about the same as other solid surfaces. However,
price must be weighed against durability and performance. The longevity,
durability and natural beauty of granite will usually outlive the home's
occupants. Granite is also far more valuable than synthetic materials
in much the same way that diamonds are more valuable than rhinestones.
The depth and character of natural stone cannot be matched by any man-made
surface. Natural stone does not depreciate with time and adds value
to your home.

Granite vs. Synthetic Tops
Even the highest quality synthetics cannot compare to the natural stone's
range of colors, durability, versatility and beauty.

Recommended Care
Granite requires few precautions. It is extremely durable, heat proof
and scratch resistant. It will not chip or crack under normal use. Spills
should be wiped up immediately due to the porous nature of the stone.
It is recommended to use cutting boards when slicing foods to protect
your knives from becoming dull. Routine maintenance should include cleaning
with clear, warm water and a mild dishwashing detergent (no lemon, vinegar
or other acidic additives). Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.
Your countertops will be sealed before they leave our shop. Depending
upon the type of granite used and individual cleaning practices, your
countertops will need to be resealed anywhere from 12 months to 5 years.
We stock a 3-in-1 cleaner which we recommend using twice monthly to
remove any buildup and restore shine.

Recommendations
It is recommended before purchasing any countertop material that you
obtain a sample of each surface and test for staining, scratching and
heat resistance. Since all granites are made by nature, no two are identical.
For that reason, we recommend approving your material prior to job commencement.
